4 primary signs you might need a knee replacement
Most people tend to live with physical injuries over long periods, with the hope that they will heal naturally. Sadly, this is not always the case, and most injuries worsen. Knee injuries and problems are common nowadays, making it essential to pay attention to even the slightest or recurring knee pain. In rather severe cases of knee injuries, partial or total knee replacement is advised.
Most knee replacements involve individuals with osteoarthritis, which is caused by the cartilage tissue that cushions the knee joint wearing out. Without a cushion in between, bones rub against each other, causing pain. Other common causes include rheumatoid arthritis, gout, haemophilia, bone dysplasia, avascular necrosis, and knee injuries.
These conditions gradually cause increased knee pain. It’s not easy to know when you need a knee replacement, but by checking with your doctor, factors like your pain level, X-ray or MRI results, health history, physical function, and weight will be considered, before surgery is recommended.
But for those who are yet to visit the doctor for preliminary examination, here are some red flags.
1. Visual changes
Your knee’s appearance will tell you more about how it feels. Noticeable changes in how your knee looks may be a sign of inflammation. If the swelling is not from a previous injury, then you should visit your doctor.
2. Limited Mobility
If you face difficulty sitting in your car or a low seat because your knee can’t bend, then you might have osteoarthritis as it’s a common sign among sufferers.
3. Pain
Experiencing chronic knee pain during and after exercise and while sleeping can be an indicator of a major knee problem.
4. Lifestyle limitations
If you go through pain and difficulty performing day-to-day tasks like bathing, getting out of bed, or climbing stairs, then it’s time you went to see a doctor. There are several effective knee pain treatment alternatives that dependency on painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs can’t beat. What might be causing your knee pain?
